Black vs. White. There is no grey?

Oct 21, 2010

The past year has seen some incredibly inept tech journalism,, both from the pros and techbloggers alike. There have been a number of companies and technologies sucked into these discussions. Adobe versus Apple versus Google. Flash dies at the hands of HTML 5. iOS is the closed devil. Android is open angel. If you even loosely follow what's going on around the web surely you've heard at least some of this talk.

The problem with so much of the conversation around these topics is that people write as though everything is black or white, right or wrong – and usually have a bias towards the "thing" they are most personally involved with. I have nothing against showing support for your favourite stuff. If you want to go on about how great the Mac App Store will be, I say go for it. But don't attack a competing approach just because you like the Apple way better.

Early on in school one of the things you should have learned was how to write a compare and contrast essay. Check this out and give it some thought next time you crack open Wordpress. Try out the opposite side, read about it, aim to understand it, then look at the similarities and differences between the thing that you think is so awesome.

What you'll probably find is that in most scenarios the topic you are writing about is actually a massive pile of grey ooze rather than a black and white Mondrian painting. In fact I think the conversation gets much more interesting when viewed from all perspectives, mixed and matched and mashed up with all sorts of varying ideas and opinions.

Going back to the Mac App Store, as much as it doesn't appeal to me and I still won't be buying a Macbook any time soon, there is clearly a huge market for this. The majority of the world's population still struggle with the most basic tasks on a computer. This is why apps like iPhoto are hiding the process of emailing or uploading photos. Some people don't know how to email attachments. I know for you tech-heads out there this is a world hard to imagine, but it exists. So while Apple fulfills the needs of one market, Microsoft and Google support another and at the extreme end of the spectrum there are those among us who still prefer command line Linux over anything else. This is the diverse world we live in and it's one I like.

Oh and there's one more thing I want to share with you – don't use the words "death", "versus", "battle", "winner" or any variation thereof in your post and particularly in your headline. These approaches show a considerable lack of creativity or thought and are strong indicators that you are probably guilty of the crimes I've outlined above.

Die Apple. I mean yes we should all regress in our technology in order to satisfy the personal grudges of egotistical maniacs. What was I thinking - since Jobs has been so balanced, fair and honest. He's the fox news of the tech world. Steve Murdoch.

I love the underlying inference that iOS users are largely computer illirate and MS and google are for the tech saavy.

Seems its harder to be impartial than you think :)

I agree totally. In any discussion it's important to at least try to be impartial and as much as possible to consider the 'opposing' point of view. This is doubly so when it comes to a subject such as rival operating systems, fraught as it is with all the tribalism and strong emotions that people seem to invest in their particular choice.

I've tried to uphold this when it comes to the approach that Apple take with their various machines and I've actually had quite a change of heart lately. How so - well I've gone from ambivalence to an attitude where I'm quite grateful for the Apple brand.

On the work front, it's so useful to be able to say that, on the whole, people that are the most technically inept and probably a waste of time will have the Apple badge prominently attached to them (as part of the lifestyle choice) and can thus be very easily identified and avoided.

No offense intended but on a personal level, amongst the people I know and respect there's pretty much a consensus that Apple users are the worst of humanity, and its been demonstrated to me repeatedly that the only people not disgusted by Apple users are other Apple users. Again, to be able to spot such people so easily is a real blessing to me and probably saves me untold headaches, something I'm really very grateful to Apple for.

One of the things I'm really hoping for is that the Apple crowd will move to largely read-only platforms like the iPad and the iPhone, and their voice will fade out across the internet. You may say I'm a dreamer...

@mattjpoole I don't think I'm trying to imply anything about iOS. In fact I quite like iOS and many of the apps on my iPhone and iPad get used regularly.

I don't think that Apple is being anything other than transparent about their intent to make iOS and now the Mac as simple as possible. Their improvements to iMovie make it clear they want to put video editing into the hands of even the most technophobic of computer users.

I also don't think it's unfair to say that there are generally three groups of computer users, the tech-savvy, the generalists and those with little or no computing skill. Without stats it's hard to say what the percentage of each of these is. What is clear is that Apple is focusing in on the latter two as their core audience.
